When designing your indoor or outdoor fireplace it is important to design not only the shape and structure, but the area surrounding it. Selecting stones for inside your fireplace is important for durability and protection from the heat of the flame. Selecting stones for the façade is more fun- filled since the options are endless. Let’s see what we can do here!

Whether you are towering heights with a floor to ceiling fireplace, facing a surround, or simply constructing a mantle, hearth, or cap – there is no limit to what you can achieve. Some fun options include mosaics, ceramics, subway tiles, mirrored glass and porcelains. A more subtle (sometimes) option would be using a slab – one seamless look of pure beauty! Creativity has no limits with the fireplace- this is quite often a focal point so spending a little extra thought and money will really go a long way- and you will be glad you did!

Specifically talking about slabs, you can choose something solid, something with stunning &

classic veining, or a stone that really gives a WOW factor with colors, veins & characteristics.

Since no two pieces of natural stone look alike – you can really create a one of a kind

masterpiece! Natural stone slabs are pieces of artwork which are as old as time, so why not

treat them like a beautiful painting?

The great thing about natural stone slabs such as marble, quartzite or granite is that you can

design them horizontal, vertical, cut them up to smaller size pieces for a twist, or do something we LOVE to do – Book match! What is a book match? Book-matching is simply making slabs “mirror” each other to create a symmetrical look. When a block of stone is processed, it is cut into slabs by a large gang saw (similar to cutting slices of bread). Once the slabs are cut, they are laid flat to be finished (either honed or polished typically). The trick with this is that every other slab is finished on opposite sides (one’s “front” and one’s “back”), so when the slabs are placed side by side they are a near mirror image of each other. Stunning!

When its warm out we venture outside and when its cold out we stay inside. No matter the

weather, daylight or nighttime, fireplaces warm our hearts and gather together the people we

love. Sharing stories & laughs, we come together to make memories here. The fireplace is the heart of the home.
